Fraunhofer IWES laser module

When standard solutions reach their limits, innovative custom designs are required. We address precisely these kinds of challenges and have been commissioned by Fraunhofer IWES, within the framework of the PREPARE research project, to develop a mobile laser solution including flexible beam guidance for large-format components.

What makes this solution special: The CO₂ laser, which can normally only be operated in a rigid assembly, is transformed into a "pseudo-fiber laser" by a flexibly mounted beam arm. This results in a highly precise yet mobile solution with an accuracy of ±0,25 mm – ideal for demanding applications in large-scale plant and special-purpose machine construction.

The mobile carriage achieves travel speeds of 1 to 10 m/min with an acceleration of over 0,5 m/min and can safely move loads of up to 600 kg. The laser, positioned almost centrally, ensures optimal weight distribution on the carriage.

For maximum functionality, a boom was integrated at each end of the carriage. Cooling water, power supply, and other media are safely routed to the components on the carriage via the rear boom. The front boom supports the movable jet arm, which is not rigid and can flexibly adapt to different component heights. A spring mechanism ensures that the jet guidance remains precise and flexible even during dynamic movements.

With this special solution, we are creating new possibilities for the flexible use of CO₂ laser systems – wherever precision, mobility and innovative technology are required.
