Laser build-up welding and filler wire

Arnold Ravensburg / coaxworks cooperation

The Maschinenfabrik Arnold GmbH from Ravensburg has developed and delivered a laser system for build-up welding using welding wire for a well-known customer for additive manufacturing from Switzerland.

A 3D laser system from the PremiumLine series was further developed and adapted to customer-specific requirements. The result is the GNT-200 model. The PremiumLine is now offered for component sizes from 2000 mm to 5000 mm with various beam sources such as fiber, disc, diode and CO2 lasers.

Laser beam welding with welding wire

The GNT-200 is designed as a gantry system and offers up to seven NC-controlled axes (XYZB-C1-A-C2). The processing optics are adjusted horizontally (X & Y), vertically (Z), tiltable (B) and rotatable (C1). The component is clamped on the faceplate of the rotary swivel axis (A-C2). All axes are involved in several transformations, so simple 2D to complex 3D geometries can be manufactured. A solid-state laser with a laser power of up to 8 kW is used as the beam source.

A special feature of the system is the processing optics from coaxworks GmbH The laser welding head wireM features a 3-beam design with integrated coaxial wire feed. By using the wireM, the welding process can be carried out in any direction, so that coatings can be applied to flat and free-form component surfaces in addition to rotationally symmetrical ones. The precise energy input causes a very even weld seam with low heat input into the component. The layer thickness can be varied by selecting the laser power (≤4 kW) and the wire diameter (0,8 / 1,0 / 1,2 mm) and thus only as much material as necessary can be applied cost-effectively. Full utilization of the welding wire results in particularly clean process conditions for man and machine. In addition, the collision protection switch-off integrated close to the process as a unique technical feature protects the laser system for a long service life in practical use.

The compact footprint and gantry construction allow for easy transport and quick re-commissioning at the end customer.

The new PremiumLine series is predestined for customers in the field of small series production, job shops, as well as research and development.
